Casting Our Lot With the Occupy Movement

October 16th, 2011

I despise sites that write content on news stories solely for the attempt of gaining blog hits and I will caution right now that there is very little original commentary here. We broke our oath because we wanted to highlight some things we feel are important about the Occupy Movement, and also because if our small voice could persuade even one person to engage in this movement, then that is better than not writing anything out of principal.

Some things that I will say about the Occupy Movement is that it’s ceiling, it’s potential, is as of right now limitless. It is pro-active and it currently has no discernible end point. It is not hard to see positives that come out of this in comparison to the Summit model of organizing. I think it is important to keep this in mind and also weigh this against the supposed lack of “message” or “direction.” Does this movement have a long way to go? Yes. But this movement has more than a week to get there.

Below is a compilation of things written about the Occupy Movement that we would really like people to read and engage with. If you haven’t already, please support this movement and get into the streets if you can. For those animal liberationists who are reading this, Will and Josh’s commentary is driven home by the knowledge that the NYPD used horses for crowd control yesterday (Oct 15th) and it is claimed that a horse was put down as a result.

UPDATE: Nov 5th 2011 – We have gotten quite a bit of site traffic recently because of an article written by Bay Area Bites for KQED News. The article is a first hand account of the Anti-Capitalist March on Whole Foods as part of Occupy Oakland and features a photo of Joseph Buddenberg sporting a Vegan Police t-shirt from our latest t-shirt fundraiser. People who have followed the site should recognize Joseph as one of the defendants in the AETA 4 case, which was thrown out last year without prejudice. This world truly is smaller than you think it is and we actually know of one other demonstrator who was wearing the exact same shirt that day. As I watched news reports come in from Occupy Oakland over the past weeks I am heartened that people would wear our shirt while they built community and demonstrated. Everyone is unsure how this movement will play out, but we all know that our issues will not be on the table if we are not present. Get out in the streets! Remember, you can always flip our shirts inside out for an all black look!
