Interview with Jason Whitney (Wayfarer)

May 2nd, 2010

I can’t really remember the first time I saw Wayfarer play. However, I do remember thinking “Black Cadillac” was a pretty sweet rocker the first time I heard it. Niagara has kind of been a second home for Wayfarer, and I hope that continues as their new album Our Fathers (which you can still download for free here) is really good. They have a pretty sweet album release show coming up, a show in St. Catharines on June 8th, and will hopefully be coming to a town near you sometime soon! Make sure to bring Jason some Pumpkin Spice Muffins w/ Chocolate Chips and ask him for a copy of Death for No Reason.

Finish this lyric, “A death for no reason, and death for no reason is…..”

Burgers

In the intro to your zine “Death for No Reason” you mention starting out you contacted a lot of your heroes and never hearing back from them. WE WANT NAMES!!!!

Did I say heroes? I don’t think I did but people who never got back to me who would have been fun to have involved…Aram Arslanian, Jacob Bannon, John Joseph…it’s been a while, I forget who else, they must not have been that important.

Most under rated recipe from the zine?

Southern fried seitan, I eat that several times a week.

You posted a suggested listening for cooking in the back of the zine, revisiting that a year or so later are there any changes you would make?

Now it’s strictly hip hop, have fun in the kitchen.

Also, from the intro, did you ever get the girl?

Nope, and she broke vegan a few months later. I guess I won?

Scenario: You are being hunted down Jason Bourne style, you need a pseudonym and quick. What is it?

Charles Daddy

Who does Wayfarer’s artwork? My gosh!

Branko Vranic, he’s incredibly talented, does art for cheap and he’s an awesome guy.

It seems like religion plays a large part in themes and lyrics of the new album. What are the chances the next Wayfarer is an xvx rated album?

Well I’m the only one who knows what’s up with veganism and the straight edge, and if I wrote songs they’d just be about girls, so really slim.

You play bass in the band. Who are some of your idols when it comes to the bass? Who are you ripping off in your mind?

Idols – Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, Al Cisneros of Sleep and Om and my dad. None of those really transfer into the kind of music I play and I just sort of do my own thing, I usually just end up half ripping off Steve’s leads.

What are the plans coming up for Wayfarer. You guys have a pretty big release show coming up, what’s the plan after that?

I’m not really sure what we’re doing, trying to get as far away from home as possible, as much as possible and sell all of our records. We’ve already got a couple new jams written so maybe a 7″ sometime late this year? Kyle has Mockingbird Wish Me Luck going on, who are way better than us, so I’m trying to convince them to take me cool places.

Walk me through the vegan shit to do in Kitchener-Waterloo. Hang out with Cory Kobbert, then what else?

Hang out with me and my roommate because apparently you don’t know how to make seitan. There isn’t really anything too amazing as far as vegan food goes in this city, I mostly just eat at home. Lotus Tea House and Duke Street Muse are good and Valentino’s Pizza makes vegan pizza that’s pretty great.

If kids could bake one vegan treat to bring to shows for you what would it be?

My favourite sweet treat is peanut butter cups, but they don’t require baking so I’ll say pumpkin spice muffins with lots of chocolate chips.

Tempeh vs. Tofu vs. Seitan

Seitan.

Soy vs. Almond vs. Rice vs. Hemp

Chocolate Almond Breeze.

Dropdead vs. Dropdead

Dropdead, hoping I can get someone from that band to share a recipe for DFNR #2, coming sometime in the next 10 years.
