Letter to the Editor – “Family and the Threat of War”

January 14th, 2011

I was deeply moved by the president’s memorial speech in Tucson, but noted two glaring omissions.

In calling on us to embrace the victims as members of our big national family, the president failed to point out that the shooter is also a family member. What are we to do with such a deeply flawed and disturbed brother or son? Can we hold him with compassion?

And then there’s the irony — some would say hypocrisy — of leaders urging civility and nonviolence while waging war and maintaining the constant threat of mass murder called nuclear deterrence. – Billy Ray Boyd
