Andy Stepanian to Speak In St. Catharines, On on Saturday Sept 24th

September 19th, 2011

The final reveal for the Vegan Superfriends #3 Fundraiser for Conflict Gypsy and the Sparrow Project is that Andy Stepanian, co-founder of the Sparrow Project, will be speaking at the event! We are honored to not just raise funds for the Sparrow Project, but be able to share the fundraiser with Andy as well. This will be Andy’s first speaking event in Canada and a great cap on a full day of amazing events. Andy’s bio is below for those who are unaware of his activist history and the history of the Sparrow Project. The event starts at 10am on Saturday Sept 24th and runs right till 10 pm. You can find the full schedule below. For those who cannot make the event, but can’t, please consider entering our online raffle.

ANDY STEPANIAN – is the co-founder of The Sparrow Project and a defendant in the SHAC7 political trial. In 2002 The Financial Times characterized SHAC as “succeeding where Karl Marx, the Baader-Meinhof gang and the Red Brigades failed.” SHAC’s protest actions drew the attention of Wall Street and the FBI culminating in a politically charged landmark free speech case. Andy and 5 others were charged and convicted as terrorists for their activism. Sentenced to 3 years in prison Andy spent his last 6.5 months in a secretive federal prison program that NPR would later nickname ‘Guantanamo North’. Andy’s activism as part of the SHAC7 is the subject of a feature-length documentary due out in 2012 from Finngate Pictures. Since his release from prison Andy works for a publisher, consults for social justice groups, and speaks on his experiences at universities.

Vegan Superfriends #3: The Ultimate Online Raffle Prize Package

September 13th, 2011

This website launched back in February 2010 with a run down of Vegan Superfriends #2 a fundraiser for the AETA 4. It seems wild now that everything that has happened on this site has happened since the last Vegan Superfriends. For the uninitiated, Vegan Supefriends follows a pretty standard format, they are all day vegan fundraisers here in St. Catharines that try to bridge community building, prisoner support, grassroots support and critical thinking. I have this thing about subversive humor being able to break down preconceived ideas about animal liberation and veganism and centering on vintage photos of the Superfriends series made a lot of sense, not in the “we are all superheros” kind of way, but in the, “fuck, if only Superman was vegan” kind of way. (Fun fact: Josh Harper’s email signature reads: “Sometimes, I wish there was a real Batman.” Spoken by Kevin Jonas shortly after watching Batman Begins.) Nothing has really changed with the format because I still believe all of the things listed above are still necessary. This time around though, we have shaken things up a little bit.

I missed the SHAC generation as well as the case itself. I was too young and then stuck in a drugged out-hate the world-do nothing about it phase. By the time I had a good handle on the case and the people involved I was already trying to drum up support for the AETA 4 case and as a result of that met a lot of people that would eventually put me in touch with some of the SHAC folks, Will Potter, Anthony Nocella, Joseph Buddenberg, etc. Out of that came my first interview with Josh (I think there have been four now) and a deep respect for not just Josh but everyone involved in the case. There is still a bewilderment of how that case actually went down. How the fuck did so many people get dragged through hell over a website?

Since I wasn’t around to support the case when it originally happened, I’ve always felt like I should do something to support those involved as they carry on with their lives. Although all of the defendants will be transitioning for the rest of their lives and deserve support, two people and two projects really stood out as needing support.

Andy Stepanian’s, Sparrow Project, was something I admired for a long time before we got in contact. Andy still had the passion that drove him, even after spending time in a Communication Management Unit (CMU). The things he was working on were all amazing projects that took on some of the most disheartening issues (Palestine, Haiti, Uganda, Repression, Racism, etc) and met them with action and critical reflection. Andy’s outspokenness around his own experience in Communication Management Unit’s has also helped blow the cover off of what has been termed “Guantanamo North,” secretive prisons-within-prisons. Aside from all of the great work Andy has done with the site and the project, he has also been a huge help for us. We sat on the idea of a Gorilla Biscuits-esque design for over a year with no real contacts for the band (it was important for us to get band approval.) Andy stepped up as he is close friends with Arthur Smilios and the rest is history. That contact has helped raise close to $700 for the Storybook Farm Primate Sanctuary.

Explaining Josh and Conflict Gypsy is a bit harder for me. I get myself into a lot of trouble for criticizing hero worship in the animal rights movement, but if I am going to be honest Josh holds special status for me. He is unrelenting and has that bang on mix of sarcasm and cynicism. An endless stream of stories, Josh is pure gold for any history nerd. For a movement that is so transient and drop out prone, his insight is like kryptonite for just about any person or theorist who thinks they have this puzzle solved. Since it’s idea stage, I have been one of the largest supporters of Josh’s project to chronicle the radical earth and animal liberation movements print history online (for free, fuck you capitalists!) I cannot think of a better resource that currently exists online and playing a small role in that project has been amazing.

These are two people who have faced a lot of unwarranted repression, but haven’t let that slow them down. Both of them will carry a stigma with them for the rest of their lives and it is important as a movement that we recognize that prisoner support does not end upon release. If you can’t make it out for the event on September 24th in St. Catharines (you really should – it will be worth traveling/ditching other plans for), I really hope you consider donating money and buying tickets for our Ultimate Online Raffle Package. $10 gets you a ticket. “Til Every Cage is Empty” T-Shirt Fundraiser Begins!

December 20th, 2010

To Whom It May Concern,

Say hello to our little friend. Welcome to our third t-shirt fundraiser.

We started doing t-shirt fundraisers for the show/site a little over a year half ago. In that time we had a sweet cat design (now our old logo) that raised $300 for Niagara Action for Animals Spay/Neuter Initiative Program (SNIP) and also a sweet Dragnet inspired design from Tom Neely that raised $500 for the Ruby Ranch Pig Sanctuary.

A lot of thought and help went into this new design. I had the idea of using the Gorilla Biscuits Gorilla for some time but wanted to contact the band to get to the ok. That is where a huge thank you goes out to Andy Stepanian and then also to Arthur Smilios. Andy got me in touch with Arthur and Arthur and the rest of the GB were very supportive. A huge thank you also goes out to Dr. Josh Hooten for putting me in touch with Matt Guack, who in turn pumped out one of the best t-shirt designs I have ever seen. (Everyone should use Matt for design work. Get at me for a contact).

The funds from this design will be going to the Storybook Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, On (Canada). Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary provides a safe and permanent home for primates retiring from biomedical research, zoos, universities & private residences, or wherever there is a primate in need of a permanent home. Twice now I have seen the director Sherri Delaney talk about the primates in her care and I know she is someone who is extremely dedicated to these animals and also extremely dedicated to ending their use as commodities. I am very happy to be raising funds for them.

As for specifics about these shirts, for the first time we will be printing this set of shirts on Just Shirts T-Shirts. These are fair trade shirts made by a co-operative in El Salvador. The perfect shirt may never exist, but we are working towards pumping out high quality fundraiser shirts that are conscious of social justice and the environment.

The presale for this shirt starts right now. Shirts can be made in any size and are available in either black or white. Cost is $20, with $10 from each shirt going to Storybook Farm. We will be printing a month from today, January 20th and shipping soon after. Paypal $20 to theveganpoliceradio@gmail.com to secure your order (S&H is on the honour system for you to cover after we ship). As with all of our t-shirt fundraisers we only do a one time print and move on. This will be the first time we will are printing 100 shirts instead of 50, so we are also hoping to up our grand total to $1,000! I know patience is a virtue that most of us lack these days, but for those who pre-order you will also be getting a bunch of free stuff (stickers/buttons/pins/leaflets/zines, etc) with your order. The upfront costs for the shirts also come directly out of pocket and this pre-order will help make sure that isn’t such a big chunk.

Huge thank you to everyone who has ever bought a previous t-shirt through us, as well to anyone who has supported the show. It means a lot us and your support makes fundraisers like this possible. ALSO BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO REPOSTS THIS LINK!

Show the world that “you have compassion for all living things!”

xo,

Dylan

UPDATE: We have had an issue with the black shirts that we got back from the printer and we are working hard to get that resolved. We are hoping to have that situation resolved in the next 1-2 weeks and have the black shirts to send out. Very sorry for the problem, but there isn’t much I could do about it. Thanks for the patience and understanding! – FEB 6 2010

UPDATE #2: Our black shirts have been re-printed and fixed! They are ready to order and ready to ship! Heck yes! – MARCH 9 2010

UPDATE 3#: WE ARE COMPLETELY SOLD OUT! FOREVER!

Review: “600 Miles to Goat”

April 19th, 2010

I remember hearing about Josh Hooten’s bike fundraiser in 2009 and I am fairly certain that I actually donated to the cause. The goal that he had set for himself, $10,000 for Farm Sanctuary, seemed humungous in my mind at the time. When all was said and done though, Josh actually crushed that goal by raising $13,000! When we interviewed Josh last January and I found out that he was writing a book about his journey, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy (I asked for a signed and kissed copy, my request was not met!) “600 Miles to Goat: A Book About A Bike Ride,” is full of all the things that made Herbivore and pretty much everything Josh Hooten & co touch turn to gold. There is the relentless sarcasm and humour, constant Dio references, societal critiques, as well as the heart felt Hooten family stories. The way that Josh weaves the very personal narrative of doing something posi for his 10 year veganaversary, with the picturesque and draining bike ride, does a great job of not only pulling you in (and cheering him on!), but also works as a great and empowering template for how we can ALL use our hobbies and talents to do something creative and great for the animals. Always one to promote the DIY ethic, Josh’s personal motto, and the message of the book, serves as the great overarching message to anyone fighting for the rights of all species, “I had about four months to learn as much as could about bike touring, as well as train, gather gear, work out the logistical issues, and raise the $10,000 I wanted to donate. Having no experience, I wasn’t sure if this was enough time or not. In situations like this, I default to my general rule: JUST MAKE SHIT HAPPEN.” As long as Josh keeps putting out stuff like this to periodically cover our Herbivore cravings, I will be a happy reader!

NEW FUCKING SHIRTS!

April 7th, 2010

Vegan Dragnet fans, your prayers for a t-shirt have been answered! A GIANT thank you goes out to Tom Neely who did the design for us. I suggest everyone check out his work and his comics! When I gave him the idea for the t-shirt and the fundraiser I wasn’t expecting something so fitting. Dragnet: started out as a radio show! The term Dragnet means “a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects,” hey, that sounds exactly like a coordinated network of Vegan Police officers! How about an easily veganized tagline! Best of all, the show Dragnet actually improved the perceptions of police officers among the general population (we aren’t really that stoked on people loving cops, but hopefully our show helps improve perceptions of animals and the people who love them!).

Our first t-shirt fundraiser raised $300 for Niagara Action for Animals Spay Neuter Initiative Program (S.N.I.P). This time, to match the design, we are sending $10 from EVERY shirt to Sherry, Bob and all the pigs at Ruby Ranch Pig Sanctuary in Mount Forest, On. We suggest you head over to their site and read some of the bio’s, look at some of the beautiful pictures and help out any way you can!

Shirts are $20 CAD, and currently we have white Mens and Women’s shirts in Medium and Large sizes (we have more sizes/colours coming so don’t fret, just let us know). All shirts are American Apparel, so please use their sizing chart.

I want to send a huge thank you out to Josh Hooten and Kelly Twomey, both were very helpful in pointing us in the right direction when it came to design and where to send the funds. Also, big thank you to Kyle, Isaac and Biff at Pedal Printing! I feel very proud saying that my t-shirts are printed by a guy who has a vegenaise tattoo on his thigh!

For anyone who wants a shirt, get in touch with us at theveganpoliceradio@gmail.com or send funds over paypal to that same address. We WILL ship internationally, but if you are outside of North America, you have to be really really patient. All shipping and handling costs are on the honour system and you will have to cover them after we ship.

xo,
Dylan/Crista/Ryan and Co.

Veggie Superfriends 2 Redux

February 6th, 2010

People started rolling in around 11 am and by 11:30 I already had a room full of people who I admire, artist and Sea Shepherd activists, Stephen and Renee Watson, vegan chocolate goddess Siue Moffat, and the vegan merch queen Kelly Twomey. Siue Moffat’s “Easy Truffles” demo brought out a large crowd, excited to gorge on the fruits of the demo. Prof. Lauren Corman, who gave a talk entitled “Animal Agency and Resistance,” held the entire room silent for close to an hour, relaying stories of resistance among non human species and urging animal activists to be attentive to how best to be an ally. The award winning documentary, The Cove, held the audience on the edge of their seat (everyone was sitting on the ground!) and numerous in attendance were visibly shaken by the documentary and interested in the film’s call to action. After the film, free vegan food was served and the crowd was very excited to try Brooklyn’s Restaurant’s famous vegan pizza and vegan chimichangas. After a small break, the venue turned into a concert venue and the loud music began. Local band, Northern Primitive, started off the music with their alt-country influenced-golden era 90’s rock. Next up was the Toronto hardcore band, Black Faxes, an aptly named band for the fundraiser. To finish off the night, Ottawa’s I Refuse, played their politically charged set to a crowd of fans and friends. The day provided many great networking and outreach opportunities as representatives from CalmAction.ORG, Sea Shepherd, OPIRG, Brock Animal Rights Club and Niagara Action for Animals all had tables at the event. Overall, the day provided a very positive atmosphere for activists and the veg-curios alike; stressing the importance of working together and looking out for the community at large. In the end, the day managed to raise over $1,500 to cover legal costs for animal activists, with the majority of that going to the American Enterprise Terrorism Act 4, Nathan Pope, Adriana Stumpo, Joseph Buddenberg, and Maryam Khajavi.

Thanks goes out to all who volunteered to help out for the event, Maree Mazi, Brandee Cote, Derrick Gordon and John Sakars.

Extra special thanks to these companies who donated to the event: Herbivore Clothing, MooShoes, Sukha Yoga, Team Green, Comondi, Veg Out, Vegan Essentials, Organic Works and The Vegan Party of Canada. PLEASE SUPPORT THESE COMPANIES!!!

Extra Extra special thanks to VegFund, who helped cover food and venue cost.
